James Dondero: The Best Analyst

James Dondero; fondly referred to by his friends as Jim is the current president and co-founder of Highland Capital Management. With more than 30 years in analyzing equity and credit markets, he has successfully made the company gain assets worth more than $19 billion under its management. He has also been pivotal in the establishment of its other affiliates such as NexPoint Capital; a healthcare BDC, Nexpoint Residential Trust that deals with REITS and Acis Capital Management which deals with CLOs. Under his leadership, Highland Capital Management has won numerous awards through the provision of relevant products and solutions for both retail investors and financial institutions. For instance, they won the Morningstar’s top-ranked Healthcare Long/Short Equity Fund back in 2014.

Early Life

Jim graduated from the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce in 1984, and at the same time, he gained acceptance into the Morgan Guaranty training. Besides being Certified Management Accountant and Chartered Financial Analyst, James Dondero achieved highest honors in Accounting and Finance. In the subsequent year, he joined American Express and served as the firm’s Corporate Bond Analyst and later as the Portfolio Manager. After leaving American Express, he served briefly as Protective Life’s GIV subsidiary’s Chief Investment Officer. During his tenure, the startup grew to a net worth of approximately $2 billion in a record five years.

Charitable activities

Jim is passionate about improving the educational opportunities and particularly for those who reside within Dallas-Fort Worth. This has seen him get into numerous partnerships with nonprofit organizations such as The Dallas Foundation, through which he makes significant donations. The various charitable activities he has been a part of include: Perot Museum of Natural Science, Snowball Express, Education is Freedom, SMU’s Tower Scholars Program, to mention but a few. He also awarded a $1 million grant to an organization that supports victims of domestic violence, called The Family Place.
